Gary Panton, the editor of St Johnstone fanzine Blue Heaven, describes the Perth club’s hopes and ambitions for the season ahead.

Describe last season in one word?
Drought.

Who do you think will win your division?
Probably Rangers. Or Celtic. My disdain for all things Old Firm makes it virtually impossible for me to assess them as separate entities.

Who do you think will be relegated?
Despite history suggesting that the newly promoted team normally does quite well, I find it hard to see anyone other than Dunfermline going down this time.

How do you rate your own manager?
I’m a big fan of Del. He’s done an impressive job so far, and I’d rather have him in charge than any of the other SPL managers – but, if his new signings can’t remedy last season’s struggles in front of goal, then we’ll be in trouble. This is a big season for him to prove he can take the club further.

How do you rate the business he’s done this summer?
Getting Callum Davidson back to the club is a big boost, and if striker Marcus Haber joins Cillian Sheridan in returning to McDiarmid then there’ll certainly be a freshness up front. It’s hard not to worry about the loss of Michael Duberry, though.

Who do you think will be the surprise package from your team this season?
If he gets a run in the team and manages to stay fit, then Kevin Moon has the potential to make a real impact.

Who is the cult hero at your club?
There’s a bit of a vacancy in that department following Duberry’s departure, but the ever-popular Jody Morris seems the obvious choice from the current line-up.

Who has been the best signing of the transfer window in your division?
St Mirren’s signing of Gary Teale looks, on paper at least, like an impressive piece of business. John Sutton and Mehdi Taouil for Hearts also look like good moves.

Which opposition player do your fans love to hate?
Expect Danny Grainger to get plenty of stick when we come up against Hearts this season.

Which opposition player would you love to have in your team?
Given last season’s afore-mentioned goal famine, a proven scorer such as Anthony Stokes probably wouldn’t go amiss.

Finally, where do you think you will finish this season?
I expect us to be in the mix for a top 6 place, but narrowly miss out – so I’ll go for 7th (which I wouldn’t be at all disappointed with).

That was the question all St Johnstone fans were forced to ask themselves in the early part of 2001, when it emerged that two of our own had fallen for the hateful charms of Old Mother Drug, the vicious, toilet-loitering temptress. The debate raged on in issue 5 of the BH fanzine, alongside an interview with Allan Preston, a rare full-page defence of John Paul McBride and a feature on Aussie talent.

Issue 4 also saw the number of pages increase from 28 to 32, which meant even more space to waste on bad jokes about Rangers, a drawing of George O’Boyle and our ‘History of Crap Hair at St Johnstone FC’. Plus, there’s a look back at some memorable (and less-than-memorable) club imports, an always-welcome piece on Vinny Arkins and even a letter calling for Martin Lauchlan to be given a chance.

So, between the sheets of a sultry issue 3 were an editorial piece praying for attractive football, an insanely upbeat feature on the signing of Tommy Lovenkrands and even a double-page article on ‘The History of Nudity at St Johnstone FC’. Phwoar, etc. And if you’re thinking “this one had everything but tits”, then think again – because Hugh Keevins and Dick Advocaat are also in it.

Also in this one was our tribute to Allan ‘Biscuits’ Preston, the McDiarmid Park cult hero who hung up his boots due to injury after six years as a Saintee.
